Proofpoint Mobile Archive: Now Available for Android!

From the "you asked for it, you got it" department: Previously available only on the Apple iOS (iPhone, iPad) platform, our Proofpoint Mobile Archive app is now available for Android devices.

The Proofpoint Mobile Archive app lets users of Proofpoint Enterprise Archive (our cloud-based email archiving solution) access their archived email from anywhere, at any time. The app lets you search your entire email archive from your iPhone or Android device, allowing you to quickly find messages, view message details, and retrieve messages to your inbox. 

 The new Android version of this app is part of the latest release of the Proofpoint Enterprise platform (announced today in our press release here).

Mobility is a big theme of this new release and, in addition to the Android version of the Mobile Archive app, the release includes enhancements to Proofpoint's support for mobile email encryption and decryption (which were already very strong). The enhanced mobile decryption user interface takes advantage of the latest smartphone and tablet technologies to display a web interface that looks and feels like a native application, making it even easier for Proofpoint Encryption users (and any recipient of a Proofpoint-encrypted email message) to decrypt, read, and respond from mobile devices.

This next video demonstrates the previous version of the "decrypt assist" features of Proofpoint Encryption, which allows any email recipients on any mobile smartphone or tablet with a web browser (including Android, BlackBerry, iPhone and Windows 7 Phone) to easily decrypt and respond to messages encrypted with Proofpoint Encryption:

Gartner 2011 Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Information Archiving Available from Proofpoint

In a press release issued today, Proofpoint announced that it has been positioned by Gartner, Inc. in the 2011 "Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Information Archiving."

Writing in the Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Information Archiving, Gartner analysts Sheila Childs, Kenneth Chin and Debra Logan note that:

"The interest in archiving data using cloud or software as a service (SaaS) solutions has intensified," noting further that, "This deployment model is rapidly evolving, and organizations now have solid options for on-premises and SaaS or hybrid solutions. Hybrid solutions consist of some component (usually an appliance) that resides on-premises that can provide additional processing prior to sending data to the cloud, such as bandwidth throttling, encryption or data reduction. In addition, hybrid solutions can provide tight integration with Active Directory or the email system."

Gartner's Magic Quadrant report describes Enterprise Information Archiving (EIA) as follows:

"EIA is the next step in the evolution of archiving that incorporates new products and solutions for archiving user files (email and files on file shares) and, optionally, other content types such as instant messages, structured data and social media content. These products provide features such as data deduplication across content types, retention management, content indexing and at least basic tools for e-discovery, such as search and legal hold. Due to the complexity associated with managing multiple data types within an archive, EIA may more broadly encompass capabilities like federated archive repository management, while delivering common policy management for migration, retention and discovery."

Video: Email Archiving and eDiscovery for Legal, Steven Heller of Graubard Miller

Earlier this year our friend Steven Heller, director of IT for New York-based law firm Graubard Miller, kindly sat down with me to explain how his organization uses our hosted email archiving solution, Proofpoint Enterprise Archive, to reduce the size of their Microsoft Exchange email store, simplify (and speed up) electronic discovery and save time and money in the process.

Steven and his firm have been using Proofpoint's email archiving service for several years now (first purchasing the product when it was known as Fortiva, before that company's acquisition by Proofpoint) and he continues to be a very vocal supporter.

In this short video, Steven talks about the issues the firm had with email retention prior to Proofpoint and explains what he likes about Proofpoint's solution:

Talking FISMA, Cloud Computing and Secure Messaging: Proofpoint and Proofpoint Customers in the News

A couple of recent news items I wanted to point out in case you haven't seen them.

First, our VP of Technology, Andres Kohn chatted with security blogger Alan Shimel for his ashimmy blog Security.EXE podcast. Andres and Alan talk about Proofpoint's work with Microsoft on what might be the biggest federal deployment of cloud technology to date (at the USDA), FISMA compliance and the ongoing battle between Microsoft and Google for cloud dominance.

Next, Proofpoint customer Kelsey-Seybold Clinic of Houston, TX is included in a recent Healthcare Informatics feature, "Secure Messaging via the Cloud and Mobile Devices." In that article, Martin Littmann, director IT systems for Kelsey-Seybold, briefly describes how that healthcare system uses Proofpoint's SaaS email security and data loss prevention solutions to help ensure the security of sensitive data.

Email Security & Compliance for Healthcare: Customer Case Studies, HIMSS 2011 Conference

Regular Proofpoint followers and readers of this blog are familiar with the many email security and compliance concerns around private healthcare information ("PHI").

Ensuring compliance with the data security and privacy rules of HIPAA (and the more recent "HITECH" updates to the HIPAA regulation) is critical for healthcare organizations, obviously, but these rules also apply to many other organizations that also handle healthcare information.

Today's Proofpoint press release, "Demand for Proofpoint’s Security and Compliance Cloud Solutions Grows in Healthcare" highlights three healthcare industry customers who use Proofpoint's SaaS security and compliance solutions to secure inbound email, detect and protect (or encrypt) private healthcare information in outbound email and archive email to meet compliance and eDiscovery requirements.

Proofpoint is (not coincidentally) also exhibiting this week at the HIMSS 2011 conference (the leading healthcare IT conference and exhibition) in Orlando, Florida. For example, our announcement today explains how Scottsdale Healthcare, a not-for-profit healthcare system based in Arizona, uses Proofpoint's SaaS solutions for anti-spam as well as for email encryption, ensuring that HIPAA-regulated healthcare information is protected in outgoing email. Scottsdale Healthcare is also the subject of a new case study (PDF format), which you can download via this link: "Case Study: Scottsdale Healthcare Relies on Proofpoint to Cure Spam and Email Encryption Challenges."

Mike Gleason, director of information services at Scottsdale Healthcare, explains, “For our organization, if any information in the body of an email or an attachment contains a social security number, a credit card number, patient identifier, or other sensitive data, it will be captured and secured. These types of data are automatically encrypted, and then forwarded on, which helps us avoid sending out emails that contain sensitive information or patient privacy data to domains outside our organization.”

Another organization, Kelsey Seybold Clinic of Houston, Texas, is moving its deployment of the Proofpoint Enterprise Protection email security solution from an on-premises deployment to Proofpoint's cloud-based (SaaS) offering.

Martin Littmann, director IT systems for Kelsey Seybold Clinic, says, “After comparing costs between different deployment types, we were convinced that moving Proofpoint’s protection solution to the cloud would save us time and money, and that our resources would no longer be stretched.”

And at Community Memorial Health System (Ventura County, California), Proofpoint's entire suite of SaaS security and compliance solutions guards against inbound threats, ensures patient privacy and  archives email for 2000 mailboxes.

Explaining his organization chose Proofpoint, Thomas Kniss, CMHS's director of clinical information systems, noted that, “Proofpoint has a very impressive list of current healthcare customers, and it was important that our vendor have experience and a successful track record of providing security solutions to healthcare organizations. Proofpoint’s knowledge and capabilities of smart identifiers and HIPAA dictionaries was a key deciding factor as well.”
