Lost Devices, Lost Data Drive Encryption Effort at UPS UK

The UK's Computing mag has a news blurb out today about how shipping company UPS is now encrypting all of its laptops and smartphone devices in the UK, following a breach of the UK's Data Protection Act in October of 2008. Full story here:

Computing: UPS encrypts laptops after data breach

Says the article:

Mick Gorrill, assistant information commissioner, said all firms needed to take steps to encrypt laptops to ensure compliance with the Data Protection Act.

"Password protected laptops are not secure," he said. "I urge all organisations to restrict the amount of personal information that is taken off secure sites. I am pleased that UPS has encrypted its laptops and smartphones, and I urge other organisations to follow suit."

Good advice no matter where your company does business. Proofpoint's latest research on data exposures shows that more than 1 in 5 large US companies investigated the exposure of confidential, sensitive or private information due to lost or stolen mobile devices or storage media in the past 12 months.

What have you got to lose?
