Why Does Spam Exist? Because it Still has Positive ROI...

SC Magazine reports today that the principals in a high-profile spam ring were indicted by a Kansas City grand jury today. The spammers had reportedly harvested eight million student email addresses from more than 2000 colleges.

Interesting enough, but here's what really caught my eye:

In his article, Chuck Miller notes that, "The four are accused of using the database they built to send targeted spam emails as part of at least 31 marketing campaigns in which they sold $4.1 million worth of products and services, such as digital cameras, MP3 players, magazine subscriptions, pepper spray and teeth whiteners."

Yes, that's right -- they sold more than $4 million worth of product via spam email. This, dear reader, is why spam still exists. If spammers couldn't make any money at it, they wouldn't do it.
